Move with the Times

Hailing a Taxi Cab

Change is hard – we all like a regular routine and knowing what to expect and how to navigate our world. But the world is changing, each and every day and standing is the same as going backward.

The challenge of moving with the times was brought home to me as I watched people leave an event I was at recently – a little off the beaten track in Lisbon across the railroad tracks and away from any major landmarks.

There were two groups of people

  • Those standing partway onto the street forlornly looking in both directions to catch sight of a passing taxi to hail them down, only to be repeatedly disappointed when they whisked by already full of patign passengers
  • The others gathered on a convenient section of the road with an area to pull into staring at their phones as they watched their ride approaching on a  digital map using their favorite ride-hailing application

Your choice each and every day is which group do you stand in for the innovation. The typical adoption curve applies to the numbers with early adopters taking some of the pain and troubleshooting out of the system

Much depends on your personal profile and preferences – but as you think about change and moving with the times, the laggards van get left behind, and quickly. Take an incremental step and perhaps try the new innovation with the reassurance you can always reject it and move back to the old way if it does not work
