Back to Work – the New Normal

It may be hard to imagine now but there will be a time when we emerge from our houses and the physical isolation/shelter-in-place and return to work. But doing so is going to require some adaptations and changes to the way we do business, our personal and professional lives.

The tail of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the COVID19 pandemic will be long and wide across many industries and it is hard to imagine any examples that will not feel the impact. What does that look like for your company, your health system, and business?

The healthcare system will be changed – the concept of remote care has already seen an expansion with Telehealth options springing up everywhere. In my local family practice who had long resisted the concept insisting on in-person visits – suddenly telemedicine was the only option and is now the method of choice for any patient wanting to access clinicians at the practice. Expect to see more activity pushed out of the clinical practice setting into the home both with technology and other adjunct providers. The payment model has been ripped bare demonstration the inadequate nature of a system that found millions without coverage with the loss of jobs and access to testing while deemed free, came with enough gotcha’s (the fee for the clinician’s order required to obtain testing and the additional laboratory test charges) to make it inaccessible to many.

New Testing Protocols

To get a sense of where businesses and offices may be heading, look no further than the announcement of Emirates who like every other airline has been crushed as their customers disappeared. Airline traffic worldwide is down 97%. For passengers flying comes with renewed risks of exposure to COVID19. So Emirates has announced it will be to conducting on-site rapid COVID-19 tests for passengers.

Passengers on today’s flight to Tunisia were all tested for COVID-19 before departing from Dubai….The quick blood test was conducted by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and results were available within 10 minutes. This test was conveniently done at the Group Check-in area of Dubai International Airport Terminal 3.

They have also introduced measures to allow for physical distancing during check-in and boarding

These principles will apply to offices and even a small office is going to need help thinking through the many issues that relate to how you deal with visitors, entry and exit management, managing your employees return to work in a limited space, how your communal spaces will need adapting and what impact, protocols for keeping your employees, customers and visitors safe to mention a few
