10 years on Design Still Taking a Back Seat in Healthcare

Written by on February 3, 2022

10 Years on this article (The Cost of Technology) remains relevant to healthcare especially as we push to digitize the experience.

There is much talk and continued push towards the ‘Digital Front Door’ and augmenting the healthcare system with #DigitalHealth but design continues to take a back seat.

Technology was never and should never be the focus of the interaction. We failed in the shift from paper records to digital records and the Electronic Medical Records that replicated a paper-based system with no thought or adaptation to the capabilities of the technology and physicians and healthcare providers have been paying for that ever since. For example, 70% or more of a resident physician’s time is spent in front of the computer by recent estimates – let that sink in for a second…….

Value creation of a digitally enabled frictionless healthcare experience requires more than implementing technology, it requires planning, coordination, and a progressive stepwise approach and considering the 5E’s

  • Essentials – solid foundational organizational, governance, and business process
  • Enablement – Optimizing technology to create repeatable success
  • Execution – Combining foundational elements with operationalized digital teams
  • Exploration – Innovating through use of established and emerging technology (AI, Machine learning, IoT and beyond)
  • Experience – Provide seamless and friction-free experiences for everyone including patients, staff, clinicians, and beyond
